Steps to Take Prior to Storing a Boat

Take the Boat for One Last Ride
While it sounds counterintuitive, it can help an owner discover any potential issues before they dock the boat for the season. Taking it for one more ride allows the owner to note what needs to be repaired or replaced prior to winterizing it. Also, if they perform repairs and maintenance during the winter, the boat will then be ready to take out in the spring with little preparation required.

Cleaning the Boat
Before engaging in boat docking Michigan, an owner must clean the boat thoroughly. This starts by removing the bilge drain plug and allows the boat’s deck and hull to be scrubbed down thoroughly. The gunk, slime, and barnacles must be removed, and any strainers opened and drained.

Everything needs time to dry before it is stored as well. Leaving a boat wet for storage invites rust and other corrosion throughout the hull. Once rust occurs, the boat may not be salvageable.
After the exterior is cleaned, the interior must also be cleaned. While this could be done throughout the season, it is best to complete it prior to storage. The refrigerator and lockers must be cleaned out and any food items that can spoil easily removed and taken back home. Also, cabinets should be left open throughout the winter so that they can air out and the circulation prevent any mildew growth.
Placing mildew control bags throughout the interior can help air out compartments and keep the inner mold free.

Hiring a Certified Prepper
If an owner does not have time to winterize their boat prior to storage properly, then they should hire a certified prepper to winterize the ship for them. This company will examine the boat, recommend repairs prior to storage, and help clean the ship so that it is ready for storage -- whether it is just a few weeks or a few months.
